5 Things I’m Loving Right Now: May 2018

1. Pepperomia Plants

I love houseplants. Apart from their air cleaning qualities, I believe they bring life and vitality to your home. Especially for me, living in a cold climate, they help to bring a healthy dose of green during the long, long winter months where everything outside is either covered in white or barren.  That’s not to say I have particularly green fingers, but they’re getting steadily greener as my interest grows. Recently, I’ve fallen in love with peperomia plants. Their leaves are so interestingly textured and the colors so vibrant.

2. Killing Eve

Summary: Eve is a bored, whip-smart security services operative whose desk-bound job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle is a talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. These two fierce women, equally obsessed with each other, will go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse, toppling the typical spy-action thriller.

What an amazing show. It’s a BBC America production, but I’m watching it through HBO Nordic where a new episode is released every Monday.  Currently, five out of eight episodes have been released.

The acting is on point, Sandra Oh finally gets the part her talent deserves, and Jody Comer’s portrayal of the sociopathic Villanelle is just amazing, as is the chemistry between them. Overall the female characters, who dominate the cast, are written and portrayed as believable, complicated human beings. What hooked me is the psychological game and obsession between the two main characters. It’s just an excellent show, which is probably why it was renewed for a second season before the first had even aired.

3. Gary Clark JR.

I love music, I can’t live without it. I listen to a wide range of music depending on my mood, anything from Bach, Chopin, and Mozart to soul, funk or jazz. But rock and blues with a lot of guitars are what I love most.  Usually, that means I spend a lot of time listening to music older than me, and the groups I like usually split, by choice or drug/alcohol related death, before I was born. Occasionally though, I find someone new, shiny, and alive.

I found Glary Clark Jr, by accident on Spotify – it’s like listening to blues and rock guitar legends like Jimmi Hendrix but mixed in with modern soul, and a more contemporary sound.  He’s a genuinely talented musician, and I’ve had THIS album on repeat for two weeks now.

4. Elinor Oliphant is Completely Fine

If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn’t spoken to another person for two consecutive days. FINE is what you say.

This book really surprised me. I started off rolling my eyes at what I felt would be a run of the mill — if a man gives you attention it doesn’t matter how depressed you are, a man’s penis is the failsafe antidote for any trauma a woman might have lived through — kind of book. I was wrong. Gail Honeyman’s writing and the plot is much deeper and more complicated than it first appears and I was genuinely surprised by the plot twist at the end. At first, I planned to write a review, but I feel this is the kind of book that is better the less you know or expect going in, even the book blurb on Goodreads gives too much away.

This is a feel-good, from misery to happiness kind of book, but it’s so much more than that.

My advice if you do decide to read it is, don’t think you know what’s going to happen. I thought I had this book figured out several times while reading, I didn’t. For plot-driven readers, I will say that this is a very character-driven, introspective story, so if you’re looking for an elaborate plot, this is probably not the book for you.

5. The Witcher 3 Statues

And finally, because I’m a huge nerd, I love my new The Witcher 3 statues from Dark Horse Delux. Just like with my ever-growing collection of Funko POP figures I promised myself I would not start collecting these. But then, I began a third playthrough of the Witcher 3, and I remembered I’m slightly in love with Geralt of Rivia. Then, by coincidence, meaning I purposefully looked them up on a website where I buy a lot of my nerd stuff, I found these and they were on sale and… yeah, I have zero self-control.  But, they look gorgeous in my woman-cave/nerd room.

So, that me, what about you, what are you’re currently loving?
